I love Lorri and Lulu!!

•July 26, 2008 • No Comments

This is the pair of Rainbow Lorikeets that have claimed our place.  It was two years ago that the first one, Lulu, came.  We thought she must have been someone’s pet, because she seemed fairly tame, but not tame enough to touch.

So we gave her some bread and honey.  She came back a couple more times, and then one day, she brought her friend.  And then a few weeks later there were MORE friends!!  The most I’ve counted at one time is 24.

Anyhow, none of the other lorikeets have become as tame as our two.  And Lorri and Lulu visit us everyday lately.  If we don’t come in a hurry, they will sit on the front door and look inside.

But they sad thing now is, we are on the move soon.  We put our house on the market the other day.  But the move is not TOO far, only into town!  Maybe our birds could come with us???  Hmmmm!!

Wallaby Tales

I thought it about time that I shared a bit of Aussie wildlife with you.

I was rather excited to have caught the following shots.  They are of  Red Necked Wallabies.  Now, there are a fair few around here, but they are not always easy to spot.  They usually come out at night, and can be seen at dawn and dusk.

Recently, I went for a visit to a Macadamia farm for lunch.  I was surprised to see a couple of wallabies out and about at that time of day.  Admittedly it was a dull, overcast day.  Perhaps that put their timing out?  (See the first three photos.)

The other photos were taken late in the afternoon.  I was visiting friends who have some acreage, and these fellas have been regular visitors there.  They’d even been coming up as close as the clothesline.

“(Love) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. BUT LOVE WILL LAST FOREVER!” (1 Corinthians 13:8, NLT)

This was the candle on our table at the wedding we attended a few months ago. I suck at the normal wedding photography… and indoor people shots. Besides, there were digital cameras everywhere, and I’m sure someone else got those other shots.

And of course, who can match the professional photographer…

Return of Lorry and Lulu!!

No, the birds are not really ours, but more like a blessing from the Lord. They decided to claim us, and pay regular visits for treats of bread and honey.

Lulu first arrived on our front verandah in July 06. She seemed fairly friendly, and would sit on the rail just near us, so we fed her some bread and honey, which she loved. We thought she must have been someone’s pet. But after inquiring, we couldn’t find any grieving owner.

Then a couple of weeks later, she brought a friend. And out came MORE bread and honey. From then on, they were regular visitors. And soon they brought their mates for a party!! :-) First two, and then four, and eventually we would have 12 in one go. But despite being inundated with all these rainbows, our pair, who by now we’d named Lorry and Lulu, remained our special ones.

They had become used to us, and gradually they started to eat from our hands, and then would sit on our hand, lap, head or wherever. They truly seemed to be a blessing from the Lord.

Rainy days at our place became quite a riot at our place. That’s when all the lorikeets thought our front verandah would be a nice place to find refuge from the bad weather. Over the past couple of years the numbers increased, and last spring I counted 24 in one go. They would almost eat us out of bread and honey.

Anyhow, as things turn out, I’ve discovered that the seasons depend a lot on how frequently they visit. When the local trees are blooming, we don’t have too many lorikeet visits, and in the spring they are all off doing what birds do best in the spring time. But come late summer, autumn and winter, when the trees have dropped their blossoms, our birds return.

So lately, come 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Lorry and Lulu make their regular house call. In the past, if I didn’t come quickly enough, they would sit on top of the door and look inside. One day, Lulu DID fly in. They are not doing that as much now, I think because we acquired a new kitty who has a keen interest in the birdlife. But still, cats don’t keep them away.

Here’s sticky-beaked Lulu from a couple of days ago!! Because the cat was around, I fed them in the grevillea tree.

And just a thought to close with…

Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
For He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness.
(Psalm 107:8-9)

Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart! (Psalm 32:11)
